What it is — and why regular housewrap is the wrong choice under stucco
Stucco holds water. That is not a defect, it is how the material behaves — it absorbs, it stays damp, and it stays in contact with whatever is behind it. Put smooth housewrap back there and the water has nowhere to drain. It sits against the sheathing.
DuPont™ Tyvek® StuccoWrap has an engineered grooved surface that creates a drainage plane between the stucco and the wall. Water that gets through the facade runs down the grooves and out at the flashing, instead of soaking the sheathing.
It also does the second job that matters under stucco: it reduces the scratch coat’s susceptibility to cracking, which helps the facade itself last longer.

The part people get wrong: breathability
At 36–50 perms this wrap is vapor open. That is deliberate. A stucco wall that gets wet has to be able to dry inward and outward. A low-perm barrier behind stucco traps moisture in the assembly and causes the exact rot it was supposed to prevent.
High perm rating plus a drainage plane is the combination that makes a stucco wall survive. One without the other does not.
How much you need
1,000 sq ft per roll. Rough math on wall area, not floor area:
- Single-story 1,500 sq ft house: roughly 1,400–1,600 sq ft of wall — 2 rolls
- Two-story 2,500 sq ft house: roughly 2,600–3,000 sq ft of wall — 3 rolls
Add 10–15% for laps and waste, and do not forget the seam tape.
What else the assembly needs
The wrap is one component. It only works as a system:
- DuPont Tyvek Tape — seals the seams between courses. Required, and it is $14.99
- FlexWrap NF 6″ — sill pan corners, seamless
- Flashing Tape 6″ — window jambs and heads
- Flashing Tape 9″ — window sills
Skipping the flashing at openings is the most common failure on stucco walls. The wrap drains the field; the flashing handles the holes you cut in it.

Can I use regular Tyvek® HomeWrap under stucco instead?
It is smooth, so it gives you no drainage plane. StuccoWrap exists specifically because stucco holds water against the wall and that water needs a path out.
Which side faces out?
The grooved surface faces the stucco. Follow DuPont installation guidelines for lap direction and fastening.
How long can it stay exposed before the stucco goes on?
Up to 120 days of UV exposure.
Does it work behind adhered stone?
Yes — direct-applied stone and masonry veneer are listed applications, along with lapped cedar and fiber cement siding.
Is this genuine DuPont?
