FREE SHIPPING on all U.S. orders — no minimum. Ships next business day from Cypress, TX. TYPAR Butyl Flashing 12″ × 75 ft — the widest flashing Typar makes. Typar aims this width at inside and outside corners, where cladding installation is most likely to damage the weather barrier: about 6 in of coverage on each face, in one piece. Same 15.5-mil butyl as the 6-inch roll, 30°F to 180°F, 6-month UV. About 9 corners per roll on 8 ft walls. Factory case is 4 rolls. Call (832) 463-7946 or email sales@85builders.com for volume pricing. Texas resale certificates accepted.

Description

The widest flashing Typar makes

Twelve inches is the top of the TYPAR flashing line. The Flexible stops at 9 inches; the Butyl keeps going to 12. If the detail is wide, this is the only Typar roll that covers it in one piece.

Typar aims this width at a specific problem, and it is worth quoting them: wide-width Butyl is “ideal for protecting those pesky inside and outside corners, where cladding installation has a greater chance of impacting the weather-resistant barrier.”

Why corners want width

Two things happen at a corner. First, the geometry: tape bent around a corner splits its coverage between two planes, so a 6-inch roll lands about 3 inches per face and a 12-inch roll lands about 6. Second, and the reason Typar calls the corners “pesky” — corners are where the siding crew works hardest. Starter strips, corner boards, nailing, trimming: the weather barrier at a corner takes more abuse during cladding than anywhere else on the wall.

Six inches per face gives that abuse somewhere to land without reaching bare sheathing.

Detail Why the 12-inch
Outside corners ~6 in per face, one piece, no seam in the bend
Inside corners Same, and the corner stays covered while trim goes on
Band joist and floor-line transitions Lands on the rim and the sheathing above with lap left over
Deep sills and wide heads Covers the full depth of a 2×6 rough sill and still turns up

Same tape, more of it

This is the identical butyl as the 6-inch roll — same 15.5-mil build, same polyethylene facer, same 30°F to 180°F range, same 6-month UV limit. Only the width changes, and with it the price per roll and how many rolls come in a case: 4 per case here, against 8 for the 6-inch.

Buy the 12-inch for the corners and the wide transitions. For flanges and straight sheathing joints the 6-inch does the same job for less per foot — most crews carry both.

How far 75 feet goes

Corners run floor to plate, so wall height sets the yield:

  • 8 ft walls: about 9 corners per roll
  • 9 ft walls: about 8 corners
  • 10 ft walls: 7 corners

A simple rectangular house has four outside corners, so one roll covers the corners on a single-story plan twice over. Articulated plans are the ones that eat it — every bump-out adds two more corners, and a plan with six offsets can run through a roll on corners alone.

Installation notes

You need:

  • A dry, clean substrate free of frost, dust and loose fasteners
  • A roller — on a corner, seat the bend first, then work out to each face
  • Surface and air at 30°F or above
  • Primer (3M Super77 or equivalent) where the substrate is marginal
  • Shingle-lapped sequencing so water always runs over a joint, never into it

Remember the OSB number: 2.8 lb/in against 7.2 on plywood. A 12-inch piece has a lot of surface area to seat, and the corner is the worst place to leave it half-rolled.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 12-inch a different tape from the 6-inch?

No. Same butyl, same 15.5-mil build, same ratings. Only the width and the case count differ — 4 rolls per case here, 8 for the 6-inch.

Does TYPAR make a 12-inch flexible flashing?

No. The Flexible Flashing tops out at 9 inches. Past that width, butyl is the only Typar option.

Can I use it on a curved detail?

No — flat butyl wrinkles on a radius, and at 12 inches it wrinkles more. Curves belong to the Flexible.

How cold can I install it?

30°F, same as the rest of the Butyl line. Below that, use a flashing rated colder.

What about the 180°F top end?

That is genuinely useful in Texas. A dark wall in July gets far hotter than the air, and asphalt-based flashings soften and bleed where this one does not.
