The everyday width
Six inches is the width that does most of the work on a house: window and door flanges, sheathing joints, and the straight runs where the flashing just has to lie flat and stay stuck.
TYPAR Butyl Flashing is a polyethylene facer over a butyl rubber copolymer adhesive — 15.5 mils total, 6.2 of facer and 9.3 of adhesive. It is peel-and-stick, it does not interact with caulk, and unlike rubberized-asphalt flashings it will not bleed or soften when the wall bakes in August.
Read the peel numbers before you buy
Typar publishes its peel adhesion by substrate, which most manufacturers do not. It is worth reading:

On OSB the bond is less than half what it is on plywood. That is not a defect — OSB is a rougher, more porous face and every self-adhered flashing loses grip on it — but it does mean rolling matters more on an OSB-sheathed house. Press it down by hand and walk away and you will be back. Roll it and it stays.

Mind the 30°F floor
TYPAR Butyl is rated for application from 30°F up to 180°F. That top number is unusually high — it is built for hot walls, which is why it suits Gulf Coast work. The bottom number is the one to plan around: at 30°F it is warmer than some competing flashings, so on a cold morning either wait for the sun or reach for a tape rated lower.
We sell flashings that go colder if that is your constraint: DuPont Flashing Tape is rated to 25°F, and ZIP System Flashing Tape goes to 0°F. Straight answer beats a callback.
How far 75 feet goes
- A 3 ft × 5 ft window, jambs and head: roughly 13 ft — about 5 openings per roll
- Same window, full perimeter including the sill: roughly 16 ft — about 4 openings
- A 3 ft entry door, jambs and head: roughly 15 ft — about 5 doors
- Straight sheathing joints: 75 continuous ft, less your laps
The factory case is 8 rolls. If the job is a whole subdivision, ask us for case pricing rather than buying singles.
Where the wider rolls earn their keep
Six inches handles flanges and flat runs. Two details it does not handle well:
- Corners — a 6-inch roll bent around a corner splits to 3 inches per face. Typar makes this same butyl in 12 in × 75 ft for exactly that
- Curves and sill pan corners — flat butyl cannot conform. That is what TYPAR Flexible Flashing is for, at 55 mils
Installation notes
You need:
- A dry, clean substrate free of frost, dust and loose fasteners
- A roller — especially over OSB, where the published peel is 2.8 lb/in
- Surface and air at 30°F or above
- Primer (3M Super77 or equivalent) where the substrate is marginal, per Typar’s spec
- The weather barrier installed before the windows — Typar states this explicitly

Frequently asked questions
Will it stick to OSB?
Yes, and Typar publishes the number: 2.8 lb/in on OSB against 7.2 on plywood. Roll it in properly and it performs; skip the roller and OSB is where it will let go first.
How cold can I install it?
30°F is the floor. Below that, use a flashing rated colder.
Is this asphalt-based?
No. It is a butyl rubber copolymer on a polyethylene facer. No asphalt means it will not bleed in heat or react with caulk and sealants.
How long can it stay exposed?
Six months of UV exposure before the cladding has to go on.
Can I use it on curved windows?
No. This is flat flashing — it will wrinkle on a radius. Use TYPAR Flexible Flashing for curves and corners.
Does it come in a case?
The factory case is 8 rolls. Ask us for case and pallet pricing.
