Huber calls the 6-inch roll the standard for panel seams, windows and doors, and that is exactly how it gets used on a ZIP System job: one width that handles the vertical sheet seams and the rough openings without switching rolls.

The 3.75-inch roll is the seam specialist — cheaper per foot, faster to run down a straight sheet joint, and linerless so there is nothing to peel. The 6-inch is what you reach for when the detail needs to land on both sides of something: a sheathing seam that has to lap generously, a jamb that needs coverage onto the framing, a head flashing that has to shed onto the face of the panel.

6″ or 3.75″ — which roll for which detail

Plenty of crews carry both: the 3.75-inch for the sheet joints, this one for everything that turns a corner or crosses an opening. If you are only buying one, buy this one.

Why it is not just tape

ZIP System flashing tape is what makes the sheathing behave as a water-resistive barrier. Taped seams give continuity from one panel to the next, which is the whole premise of the system — the panel face is the WRB, and the tape is what closes the gaps between panels.

The adhesive is acrylic and pressure-activated: it does not grab hard on contact the way a butyl does, it builds bond as it is rolled and keeps building over time. That is why rolling with a rubber-headed roller is not optional. Tape that is placed and not rolled is tape that will lift.

Note that the 30-year coverage is a system warranty: it applies when the tape is used with ZIP System sheathing, not as a standalone product guarantee.

How far 75 feet goes

Coverage depends on whether you are running seams or wrapping openings:

• Vertical panel seams, 8 ft sheets: about 9 seams per roll
• Vertical panel seams, 9 ft sheets: about 8 seams per roll
• A 3 ft × 5 ft window, jambs and head: roughly 13 ft — about 5 openings per roll
• A 3 ft × 5 ft window, full perimeter including the sill: roughly 16 ft — about 4 openings per roll

Add a few feet for laps at every termination. If the job is mostly straight seams, the 3.75-inch roll stretches your money further; if the openings are wide or the corners are outside corners, step up to the 9-inch.

Installation notes

You need:

• A dry substrate, free of frost, dust, dirt and proud fasteners
• A rubber-headed roller — the adhesive is pressure-activated and must be rolled
• Backer rod or similar backing in any gap wider than 1/2 in, before taping
• Air, substrate and tape all at 0°F or above at the time of application

Do not use it for:

• A substitute for self-adhering ice and water barrier in roof applications
• Fire caulking around heat-generating exhaust vents, such as dryer vents

Frequently asked questions

Do I really have to roll it?

Yes. The acrylic adhesive is pressure-activated — the bond comes from the rolling, not from pressing it on by hand. Any rubber-headed roller works. Unrolled tape is the single most common ZIP System install failure.

How cold can I install it?

Down to 0°F, as long as the air, the substrate and the tape itself are all at 0°F or above and the surface is free of frost.

Is this the same as the 3.75-inch roll, just wider?

Same tape chemistry and same performance, but the 3.75-inch is linerless and this one is linered. On wide details the extra width is the point; on straight seams the narrower roll costs less per foot.

Can I leave it exposed over the winter?

Up to 180 days. After that it has to be covered by a code-compliant wall or roof covering.

Will it stick to something other than ZIP sheathing?

Yes — OSB, wood, steel, aluminum, vinyl and PVC are all listed substrates. But the 30-year system warranty only applies when it is used with ZIP System sheathing.

Can I use it on the roof?

For taping ZIP System panel seams, yes, including Type III construction. It is not a replacement for ice and water barrier.
