Description

Built for thick walls, bought by the job

This is the widest stretch tape Huber makes, on the long roll — and Huber’s stated use for it is thicker multifamily wall assemblies. Ten inches of pan width, 75 feet of it, for buildings where the walls are deep and the openings repeat by the hundred.

Multifamily walls got thicker for a reason: continuous exterior insulation to hit energy code, deeper framing, rainscreen gaps. Every inch you add outboard of the framing is an inch the sill pan has to cross before it can turn up and lap. A 6-inch roll runs out of material on a 2×6 wall before it reaches the face. Ten inches gives you the depth plus a real leg on both ends.

Check your construction type first

ZIP System stretch tape is code-recognized for Type V construction. That covers the wood-frame multifamily this product is aimed at — the three- and four-story garden and podium-deck buildings where it gets used every day.

It does not carry a Type III listing. ZIP System flashing tape has a Type III carve-out, but only for taping panel seams in roof applications. If your project is Type III, confirm the flashing approach with the design team before you buy stretch tape for the openings — the listing is the listing.

Where the ten inches goes

Assembly Sill depth to cover Left for upturn and outboard lap
2×6 wall ~6 in ~4 in
2×6 plus 1 in continuous insulation ~7 in ~3 in
2×4 plus 2 in continuous insulation ~6 in ~4 in
Double-stud or staggered-stud 8 in and up Plan a two-piece detail

Past about 7 inches of sill depth you are designing the lap, not just picking a width — work that detail out on the mock-up unit before the trade is running production.

Why one piece matters more at scale

On a single house a lapped sill pan corner is a risk. On a 200-unit building it is a systematic one: whatever the crew does at opening number three, they will do 800 more times. A pan formed from one continuous piece removes the joint from the detail entirely, which is one less thing for the third-party inspector to open up and one less repeated defect to chase during warranty.

Stretch tape conforms in all directions to fit sills, curves and corners in a single piece, and at 42 mils it is more than three times the thickness of standard flashing tape.

How far 75 feet goes

  • 3 ft bedroom window: about 5 ft per pan — 15 openings per roll
  • 4 ft living-room window: about 6 ft — 12 openings
  • 6 ft balcony slider: about 8 ft — 9 openings
  • 3 ft unit entry door: about 5 ft — 15 doors

A typical two-bedroom unit with four windows and a slider runs roughly 26 ft of pan — call it one roll per two to three units. Multiply by the unit count and order in one shot; splitting a multifamily order across deliveries is how lot numbers and install dates stop matching.

For a handful of openings rather than a building, the 10″ × 20 ft roll is the same tape in a small-job length. If the walls are standard depth, the 6″ × 75 ft roll costs less and pans a standard sill fine.

Installation notes

You need:

  • A dry substrate, free of frost, dust, dirt and proud fasteners
  • A rubber-headed roller — seat the flat of the pan first, then work the stretched corners
  • Backer rod or similar backing in any gap wider than 1/2 in, before taping
  • Air, substrate and tape all at 0°F or above at the time of application
  • The window or door manufacturer’s own sill pan instructions — those govern, and on a multifamily job they are usually in the submittals

Do not use it for:

  • A substitute for self-adhering ice and water barrier
  • Fire caulking around heat-generating exhaust vents, such as dryer vents

Frequently asked questions

Is it approved for Type III construction?

No. Stretch tape is recognized for Type V. The Type III recognition in the ZIP System line belongs to flashing tape, and only for taping panel seams in roof applications.

Why 10 inches instead of 6?

Wall depth. A 2×6 assembly puts about 6 in of sill in front of you before any lap; a 6-inch roll lands edge to edge with nothing left over. Ten gives you roughly 4 in to work with.

How much does it stretch?

Huber does not publish a percentage. The published figure is 225 psi tensile strength, with the product described as stretching in all directions to fit sills, curves and corners in one piece.

Does it work over continuous exterior insulation?

It bonds to the listed substrates, PVC and vinyl included. Add the insulation thickness to your sill depth when you check whether 10 in is enough.

How many rolls for a 100-unit building?

Rough planning: one roll per two to three typical units, so 35 to 50 rolls, plus waste and mock-up. Send us the window schedule and we will run the count with you.

What if the job stalls after the openings are flashed?

180 days of exposure, then it has to be covered by a code-compliant wall covering.

How fast does it ship?

We ship next business day from Cypress, TX.
