Huber’s width for outside corners and wide details — about 4½ in of coverage on each face, so the corner gets wrapped in one piece instead of two lapped strips. 12-mil acrylic, installs down to 0°F, 180-day exposure limit, AAMA 711 and ICC-ES ESR-2227. Note the roll is 50 ft, not 75. Huber part S-20024. Call (832) 463-7946 or email sales@85builders.com for volume pricing. Texas resale certificates accepted.

Description

The outside-corner roll

Huber’s guidance for the 9-inch is short and specific: use it for wider areas such as outside corners. That is the detail this width exists to solve.

Wrapping an outside corner is a width problem. Tape bent around a corner splits its coverage between two faces — a 6-inch roll centered on the corner lands about 3 in on each side, which is thin once you account for the bend itself never sitting perfectly centered. This roll gives you roughly 4½ in per face, enough that a crooked start still leaves real coverage on both walls.

Same logic applies anywhere the detail is wider than a seam: mulled window assemblies, band joist transitions, and any place two planes meet and you would rather not build the flashing out of overlapping strips.

Where the 9-inch earns its price

Detail Why 9″
Outside corners ~4½ in of coverage per face instead of ~3 in — Huber’s stated use for this width
Mulled window units The mull joint plus both frames in one pass, no strip-over-strip buildup
Band joist and floor-line transitions Lands on both the rim and the sheathing above with lap to spare
Wide rough openings Head flashing that has to shed well clear of the opening

For straight sheet seams and standard windows this is more tape than the job needs — the 6-inch roll is the everyday width. Buy the 9-inch for the details the 6-inch has to be pieced together to cover.

Note the length: 50 feet, not 75

Every ZIP flashing tape roll is not the same length. The 3.75-inch comes 90 ft, the 6-inch comes 75 ft, and the 9-inch and 12-inch both come 50 ft. Wider tape, shorter roll — worth knowing before you order by the roll count instead of by the foot.

How far 50 feet goes

Corners are measured floor to plate, so the wall height sets your yield:

  • 8 ft walls: about 6 outside corners per roll
  • 9 ft walls: about 5 corners per roll
  • 10 ft walls: 5 corners, with little left over

A simple rectangular house has four outside corners, so one roll covers the corners on most single-story plans with tape left for a mull joint or two. Two-story or articulated plans — bump-outs, offsets, wing walls — run through it faster than the corner count suggests, because every offset adds two more corners.

Installation notes

You need:

  • A dry substrate, free of frost, dust, dirt and proud fasteners
  • A rubber-headed roller — work from the corner outward so the tape seats into the bend before the faces are pressed down
  • Backer rod or similar backing in any gap wider than 1/2 in, before taping
  • Air, substrate and tape all at 0°F or above at the time of application

Do not use it for:

  • A substitute for self-adhering ice and water barrier in roof applications
  • Fire caulking around heat-generating exhaust vents, such as dryer vents

Frequently asked questions

Why not just run two strips of 6-inch at the corner?

You can, and crews do — but every lap is a joint, and the joint lands right at the corner, which is the worst place for one. One 9-inch piece wraps the corner with no seam in the bend.

Is this the same tape as the 6-inch, just wider?

Same chemistry, same 12-mil build, same code listing. The difference is width and roll length: this one is 9 in × 50 ft, the 6-inch is 75 ft.

Does it work on inside corners too?

It will, but inside corners rarely need this much width, and a tape that has to compress into an inside corner is a job for a stretch product. For sill pans and inside corners look at ZIP System Stretch Tape.

How cold can I install it?

Down to 0°F, with the air, substrate and tape all at or above that and the surface frost-free.

Do I still have to roll it?

Always. The acrylic adhesive builds its bond under pressure. On a corner, roll the bend first, then each face.

Can I leave it exposed?

Up to 180 days, then it has to be covered.

Do I need ZIP sheathing to use it?

No — it bonds to OSB, wood, steel, aluminum, vinyl and PVC. But the 30-year coverage is a system warranty that applies with ZIP System sheathing.

How fast does it ship?

We ship next business day from Cypress, TX.
